COLUMBUS, Ohio \u2014 Blackhawks defenseman Seth Jones has talked about his interest in a possible trade after each of the team\u2019s last three on-ice sessions. He continues to be remarkably open and honest about it.<\/p>\n
After practice Friday, he doubled down on what he first discussed Wednesday with the Sun-Times \u2014 that he would like to be traded to a winning team.<\/p>\n
\u201cI just want to compete in the playoffs every year,\u201d Jones said. \u201cWhether that\u2019s this year or next year or the year after, [it\u2019s] whatever it is. But [I\u2019m seeking] a team that\u2019s not in a rebuild, that has pieces already to it, that\u2019s ready to go.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve been here the last four years, through probably the darkest times the Blackhawks have seen in a while. I think things are moving up and moving forward, but my timeline might be different than…the Blackhawks\u2019. It\u2019s nothing against anybody. I\u2019m not holding it against anybody, what they decided to do here. But sometimes it\u2019s not in everyone\u2019s plans.\u201d<\/p>\n
Jones added that this idea has been \u201cthrown around\u201d for a while between him and his agent, Pat Brisson, but they recently decided to \u201cpush the needle.\u201d<\/p>\n
That explains some of Jones\u2019 honesty about the subject. Making his wishes public puts more pressure on Hawks general manager Kyle Davidson to try to make something happen. It also alerts other teams around the league that he\u2019s available, perhaps piquing their interest.<\/p>\n
To Jones\u2019 credit, he has been consistently open and honest throughout his Hawks tenure. He has never shied away from uncomfortable topics or objective analysis of his or the team\u2019s struggles, which has been admirable.<\/p>\n
His openness is only acceptable and healthy from a team standpoint, though, if its ripple effects don\u2019t create a distraction in the locker room. On that front, captain Nick Foligno adamantly insisted Saturday they wouldn\u2019t.<\/p>\n
“[Seth will] continue to show up,\u201d Foligno said. \u201cHe\u2019s going to continue to do what he needs to do to help this team be successful, and himself. That\u2019s the most important thing. I don\u2019t have to worry about that with Seth.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhether he feels a certain way, I can\u2019t control that. It\u2019s his own life, his own career. You support him and obviously wish he felt differently, but he has his reasons, and rightfully so. It\u2019s how he feels…but it\u2019s never going to bleed into his game. I know that for a fact. [If] he has a rough night, [the narrative] shouldn\u2019t be, \u2018He doesn\u2019t care.\u2019 Seth cares a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n
