It’s no secret that Detroit Lions GM Brad Holmes LOVES drafting players from Alabama. In fact, since taking over as GM of the Lions back in 2021, Holmes has selected Jameson Williams (1st Round), Jahmyr Gibbs (1st Round), Brian Branch (2nd Round), and Terrion Arnold (1st Round) in the draft.<\/p>\n

\"Detroit <\/picture><\/figure>\n

So, will Holmes select another player from the Crimson Tide when the Lions are on the clock with the No. 28 overall pick (or higher if he trades up again) in the 2025 NFL Draft? In his 2025 NFL Mock Draft 1.0, Dan Parr of NFL.com has the Lions doing exactly that.<\/p>\n

The Detroit Lions Select\u2026<\/strong><\/h3>\n

With the No. 28 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, Parr has the Lions selecting LB\/EDGE Jihaad Campbell out of Alabama.<\/p>\n

Brad Holmes has selected at least one Crimson Tide player in each of the last three drafts,\u201d Parr wrote. \u201cHe extends the streak to four with\u00a0Campbell, who can generate heat off the edge right away and play off-ball linebacker if needed down the road.<\/em><\/p>\n

    My Thoughts<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    If the Detroit Lions select Jihaad Campbell, they will be getting an explosive defender who flies all over the field and makes plays. Though Dan Parr has Campbell listed as a LB\/EDGE, I just don’t see him playing on the EDGE in the NFL. That then raises the question of, \u201cWill the Lions select another linebacker in the first round, when they need defensive linemen (Edge and DT) and potentially offensive linemen (if Kevin Zeitler does not re-sign)?\u201d<\/p>\n

    Brad Holmes has made it clear that he is not worried as much about \u201cneeds\u201d as he is about \u201cselecting the best football player available\u201d in the NFL Draft. If Campbell is available when the Lions are on the clock at No. 28, you can bet the Lions will strongly consider him.<\/p>\n

    Lions Told to Not Extend Aidan Hutchinson, Jameson Williams Contracts<\/h1>\n

    Getty <\/span>In the wacky NFL offseason, the Detroit Lions are being told to avoid working out deals with Aidan Hutchinson and Jameson Williams.<\/p>\n

    As the NFL offseason ramps up, so does the talk about which\u00a0Detroit Lions\u00a0may be cutting a deal to stay in the Motor City for the long haul. Among the most prized Lions possessions up for a contract renewal are edge\u00a0Aidan Hutchinson\u00a0and running back\u00a0Jameson Williams. Both had impressive seasons with the Lions, even though Hutchinson was out after\u00a0Week 6 due to a broken left fibula.<\/p>\n

    Now, Detroit is being urged not to extend both Hutchinson and Williams\u2019 contracts for now.<\/p>\n

    \n

    Lions Advised to Go for Kerby Joseph<\/h2>\n

    In a February 13 feature for A to Z Sports, NFL analyst and expert Mike Payton\u00a0urges the Detroit Lions\u00a0to give safety\u00a0Kerby Joseph\u00a0a deal during the offseason and not Hutchinson or Williams.<\/p>\n

    Before you get too hot-headed about this pick, note that Payton says some of this has to do with timing. He notes that Detroit picked up both Hutchinson and Williams as\u00a0first-round draft picks, so they\u2019re both eligible for fifth-year options. That means Detroit is able to do their deals next year.<\/p>\n

    Payton adds that the Lions dealt with \u201ca near season-long injury with Hutchinson and a suspension with Williams,\u201d so \u201cthe likelihood is that both players are probably going to want to wait until next year anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n

    \u201cThat way they can have a good season and maximize their profits,\u201d Payton stated. \u201cRight now the Lions would not be offering them top-dollar based on those factors.\u201d<\/p>\n

    So, those are some reasons to wait on inking a new deal with Hutchinson and Williams. As for moving on Joseph,\u00a0Payton notes\u00a0that the safety had a stellar, All-Pro season \u201cthat saw him get votes for Defensive Player of the Year, as well.\u201d He adds that the Lions could do with Joseph what they did when working out\u00a0Penei Sewell,\u00a0Jared Goff\u00a0and\u00a0Amon-Ra St. Brown\u2018s contracts during the last offseason: get \u201cahead of the market.\u201d<\/p>\n

    As a side note, Payton adds that\u00a0Baltimore Ravens\u00a0all-pro\u00a0Kyle Hamilton\u00a0is up for an extension this season and that many analysts and experts think he\u2019ll be the \u201chighest-paid safety\u201d in the NFL. That means if the Lions act quickly and finish a deal with Joseph before Hamilton signs, they could save some money.<\/p>\n

    As for the stats, Jameson Williams had\u00a058 catches for 1001 yards\u00a0and scored an\u00a0impressive eight touchdowns in 15 games\u00a0in 2024. Hutchinson\u00a0had\u00a07.5 sacks, seven tackles for loss\u00a0and\u00a045 quarterback pressures, but was out after Week 6. Joseph had\u00a0nine interceptions\u00a0in 2024 alone.<\/p>\n

    Detroit Lions\u2019 Super Bowl Window<\/h2>\n

    It\u2019s early to think about the Super Bowl for next year, but on February 14,\u00a0Bucky Brooks of NFL.com\u00a0ranked the teams he believes have the best chance to get there next season. He has the Lions at No. 2, only behind the\u00a0Philadelphia Eagles. Well, la-di-da.<\/p>\n

    While he notes that losing offensive coordinator Ben Johnson \u201ccould take away some of the Lions\u2019 trademark pizzazz on offense,\u201d what could help is \u201cthe re-emergence of a healthy and destructive defense under new coordinator Kelvin Sheppard,\u201d which \u201ccould enable the team to roll through the NFC with a blue-collar approach that would serve it well in the postseason.\u201d He adds that if Hutchinson and\u00a0Alim McNeill\u00a0are back in full form, even better.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
