San Francisco 49ers\u00a0running back\u00a0Christian McCaffrey\u00a0has yet to make his season debut, but all signs point to him returning soon. Here\u2019s the latest on McCaffrey\u2019s\u00a0injury\u00a0and when we might see the reigning Offensive Player of the Year back on the field.<\/p>\n
McCaffrey has spent the entirety of the 2024 campaign on injured reserve while battling Achilles tendinitis in both legs. He sought treatment from a specialist in Germany, and the injury was way worse than the 49ers initially suspected based on head coach Kyle Shanahan\u2019s comments during the preseason (when he referred to it as a minor calf strain) and after Week 1 (when he labeled McCaffrey \u201cday to day\u201d).<\/p>\n
After he was a surprise inactive for the 49ers\u2019 season-opener, McCaffrey was subsequently placed on injured reserve.<\/p>\n
For more clarity on McCaffrey\u2019s\u00a0Achilles tendinitis injury, the Mayo Clinic defines it as \u201can overuse injury of the Achilles tendon, the band of tissue that connects calf muscles at the back of the lower leg to your heel bone.\u201d<\/p>\n
The\u00a0clinic\u00a0also says the injury \u201cmost commonly occurs in runners who have suddenly increased the intensity or duration of their runs.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mayo indicates most cases of Achilles tendinitis can be treated with at-home care under a doctor\u2019s supervision. Still, more severe cases \u201ccan lead to tendon tears (ruptures) that may require surgical repair.\u201d<\/p>\n
While the 49ers have yet to designate McCaffrey to return from injured reserve, the veteran running back is close to getting back on the field.<\/p>\n
The 49ers are coming off their Week 9 bye, and McCaffrey is reportedly targeting a Week 10 return against the\u00a0Tampa Bay Buccaneers.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt depends how this week goes,\u201d Shanahan said during the bye week. \u201cHe\u2019s had no setbacks, so it looks like we\u2019re on track, but he\u2019s going to hit it hard this week while we\u2019re gone. \u2026 As long as it all goes good, hopefully, we\u2019ll get him back in practice next week.\u201d<\/p>\n
This lines up with what ESPN\u2019s Adam Schefter reported on \u201cThe Pat McAfee Show.\u201d Schefter noted that McCaffrey has had no setbacks and is poised to return versus the Bucs.<\/p>\n
