FRISCO – There is an inherent danger in reading too much into a text, a tweet, or – when it comes to the Dallas Cowboys, where the “Soap Opera” is the main thing – even a report from a credentialed media person.<\/p>\n
Having said all of that, while the Jerry Jones-led head coaching search has taken a series of twists and turns in the last three weeks, we now have a substantial development from inside the locker room here inside The Star …<\/p>\n
intriguing turn as the team considers multiple candidate’s for the leadership position.<\/p>\n
Brian Schottenheimer, a key name in the search fresh off two days of interviews with the Joneses, is getting the thumbs-up from no less a figure than Dak Prescott.<\/p>\n
Schottenheimer and his predecessor Kellen Moore are among the notable interviewees so far as the team seeks a replacement for the departed Mike McCarthy. Schottenheimer’s one-time Seattle boss Pete Carroll is also a name merit mentioning. And there are others, of course.<\/p>\n
But on the subject of “Schotty”? Dak’s made his feelings clear.<\/p>\n
“He’ll be ready for the next step,” Clarence Hill Jr. quotes Dak as having told him, via the DLLS Cowboys Podcast. “He has the right personality and brain.”<\/p>\n
Prescott’s offering of a positive Cowboys endorsement of Schottenheimer doesn’t mean the QB has negative things to say about other candidates. But his words do carry weight inside this building. And with “Schotty” having served as the Cowboys’ offensive coordinator for the past two seasons under the guidance of his mentor, McCarthy?<\/p>\n
There is obviously a solid Prescott\/Schottenheimer relationship.<\/p>\n
We can argue that maybe Dak and the Cowboys offense needs something different, or that being “Dak-friendly” with the comfort level that goes with that isn’t necessarily a plus.<\/p>\n
But in the end, the Joneses can believe this offense has been steered in the right direction in recent years – and with a healthy Prescott there are numbers to support that; Prescott in 2023 ended up throwing for 4,516 yards and 36 touchdowns with only nine interceptions.<\/p>\n
And that helps explain the candidacy of Schottenheimer, even though at 52 he’s never before been a head coach. … a job that Prescott obviously believes he’s ready for.<\/p>\n
